TIPS when traveling to Canada

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

- In Canada, it is illegal to drive with an open bottle of alcohol in your car whether it's filled with alcohol or not.

- Personal questions (family, religion, and race) should not be taken lightly even if you make friends with people from other countries while traveling.

- Unlike in certain countries, drinking alcohol outdoors is strictly prohibited except in restaurants, homes, pubs, and other places where drinking is legally permitted. (strict punishment)

- Same in the US, tips should be provided for customer service wherever you go. For example, there is a part that pays tips when paying after a meal. If the service of the staff was good, express your gratitude with 10-15% of the payment amount.

- When entering any Canadian restaurant or bar, wait for an employee to direct you to a seat. Even if there is an empty seat, it is disrespectful to sit at will.

- When you eat at a restaurant, the price on the menu board does not include tax (usually around 13% in Ontario but varies depending on the city) and VAT. Do not order food by looking at the price on the menu.

- Security in Canada is not great. Of course, it's not bad either. However, in public places such as (libraries, parks, cafes, restaurants, and public transport), you should always take care of your luggage and bags that you have on hand.

- When you're in public, and happen to come across any homeless person or anyone who looks like they're not in the best place, it is best to just ignore them and carry on with your day.
